Wired: Article on Google Co-Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin – “You can’t understand Google unless you know that both Larry and Sergey were Montessori kids. In a Montessori school, you go paint because you have something to express…not because the teacher said so. This is baked into how Larry and Sergey approach problems.  They’re always asking, why should it be like that? It’s the way their brains were programmed early on.”

Will Wright, Montessori Grad and Creator of SimCity & Spore – [Kids] can become interested in pretty complex theories, like Pythagorean theory, say, by playing with blocks. It’s all about learning on your terms, rather than having a teacher explain stuff to you. And when kids discover these things on their own, what they learn sticks with them so much more.

Performance Data
DCS Montessori, and Montessori education in general, have built a classroom model based on a 3 year cycle. That is that students spend three years in a classroom environment at a time, such as 3,  4, and 5 year olds being in our Primary classrooms, our 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders being in our Lower Elementary classrooms, and our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders being in our Upper Elementary classrooms. All educational research suggests that students struggle with transitions and so our school minimizes these transitions, but the benefits of the 3 year cycle are greater than that. Educational aspects such as peer tutoring, contiguous teacher and assistant relationships, as well as contiguous teacher knowledge of the child, create clear academic advantages to this model, too. Based on comparative means, from CSAP, NWEA’s MAPs, Body of Evidence (BOE) assessments, DRA2, STAR, and six-trait writing assessments, across its levels, DCS Montessori three year cycle has the following statistical benefits…

1st year – Growth Rate ~ 45% (around the State Avg.)

2nd year – Growth Rate ~ 58% (exceeds both State and District Avg.)

3rd year – Growth Rate ~ 70% (One of the best in the State)

Testimonials

The maturity and knowledge my kindergartner has gained in the three years she has been at DCS Montessori is remarkable. DCS Montessori has created the perfect environment for my child to learn, grow, and feel secure. The excellence of the teachers and leaders within the school has made it what it is today. We only hope a middle school and high school are in the works for the school’s future.

I recommend DCS Montessori to everyone I meet! As a parent I am a big fan of DCS Montessori charter school, this school provides such a fabulous program for its students. It encourages them to think beyond as well as excel. I am looking foward to the next 6 years at DCS Montessori. In the future, I hope that DCS Montessori will have additional facilities to educate their middle school and high school students.

DCS Montessori is the perfect learning environment for our daughter. The teachers are respectful and supportive of her strengths and weaknesses. She is encouraged to be the unique individual she is without being required to fit into a “traditional” mold. She loves to go to school and is retaining a great base of a love of learning that surely will serve her well in the future.

~ Anne Manske ~

My daughter actually likes going to school (not something that was part of my childhood in a traditional school setting). Her teachers have been great. They have really been supportive and even more my daughter considers them as her friends. I’m amazed by how much she has already learned and also her enjoyment of the learning process. We are grateful that the Montessori experience is available for our daughter. She is blooming.

The kindergarten year is one that comes full circle in that the mentored become the mentors. The kindergartners embrace this responsibility whole-heartedly and take great pride in the fact that they are entrusted with privilege. They become role-models, helpers and leaders to the younger children and revel in this role. What an invaluable life lesson they experience, at such a young age, in the Montessori classroom.

My daughter truly adores her class and came home from Kindergarten, day 1, glowing.  I am a former Montessori student and insisted on Montessori for her. Sending her to DCS Montessori has been one of our best decisions as parents.  People don’t believe me when I tell them she is reading, writing, and doing four digit addition at school and she has chosen to do these things of her own free will (with her teacher’s gentle guidance and encouragement).

~ Heather C. ~

My husband and I want our children to learn more in school than simply the required academics. DCS allows students thrive academically and also nurtures growth of the whole child, instilling confidence and building high self-esteem. Students are encouraged daily to practice solid decision-making skills, and they are learning at an early age what accountability is all about. Traditional classrooms simply can’t deliver these priceless life lessons.
